"Horse Barn, Maxwell's Quarters" Valley Forge, PA
(11x15)
Truly humbling to walk through Valley Forge. The profound feeling of history is thick in the air. But did you know, there were no battles going on when Washington and his army were encamped here? Both armies took off for the winter.
"Atop the Winward House" Cape May, NJ
(11x15)
The B&B's in Cape May are really amazing. You're taking a step back in time when you walk down any street. And they all have their own special story to tell. This one, atop the Winward House, is no exeption.
"Below the New Fountains" Longwood, PA
(9x11)
Longwood Gardens invested two years and multiple millions of dollars updating the famous Longwood Fountains. Here, below the new fountains, we are looking down the length of the fountains. Love this place.
"R. L. Irwin Mushroom Barn" Kennett Square, PA
(13X19)
Commission
Family-owned mushroom company serving hotels and restaurants throughout the Mid-Atlantic region since 1946. Located in historic Kennett Square, PA, the "Mushroom Capital of the World."
Pretty cool story behind these two paintings. I had driven past this location for a number of years, always intending to stop in sometime. Then one day I was having one of those days, and just felt compelled to drop in. Ordered a coffee and and an egg sandwich, and met some really nice people. Was introduced to the Assistant Pastor of The Well who took a look at my artwork online and liked it. A cup of coffee and egg sandwich later, he had commissioned me to paint the location. Painted one from the north, and one from the south, but couldn't decide which one to present. Decided to show both, and unexpectedly, he bought both.
"The Well" Hockessin, DE
(14x20)
Commission
"The Whip Tavern" Coatesville, PA
(10x14)
A charming old English-style pub off the beaten trail. Reminds one of The Hunt in the Fall. Bangers and mash and classic fish and chips can be had at this quaint location in southern Chester County.
"Rooftops II" Cape May, NJ
(10 x12)
Cool rooftop view from the top deck of the Captain Mey B & B in Cape May, NJ
"A Small Hill in Westtown" West Chester, PA
(20 x 26)
(Commission)
Nestled in the rolling countryside of southeastern Pennsylvania, this elegant
and stately home sits, appropriately, atop a hill while melting effortlessly into its
beautiful tree-covered surroundings. With all of its angles and long shadows, this
home was a lot of fun to paint.
"Nucor" Flower District, Manhattan, NY
(18 x 24)
(Commission)
The owner of Nucor Construction Corp., and owner of this building
was set to retire. What a more-fitting way to honor the founder of NCC
than with a watercolor portrait of the very business he nurtured and grew
from infancy. Located in the heart of New York's Flower District, this building
is just south of Macy's, Madison Square Garden and Penn Station.
"The Cistern" The College of Charleston, SC
(18 x 24)
(Commission)
This stately building, The Cistern, at the College of Charleston, South Carolina, is the centerpiece of this beautiful college campus. It exudes southern charm. Underclassmen are not allowed to walk across the actual cistern grass or walkway until graduation day when seniors walk up the steps, receive their diplomas, and walk down the other side. Sometimes traditions can be really pretty cool.
"Jerry & Jill's" Lincoln University, PA
(18 X 24)
(Commission)
I was commissioned, via a charity auction for Samantha Beck, to paint
this beautiful home. Perched up on the hill, this home in Lincoln University was an
enjoyable subject to paint because of its many angles and shadows.
"Slice of America" Landenberg, PA
(12 X 16)
The American flag flying on an neighbor's front porch just kind of grabbed me.
Made me feel blessed to be living in this country. So, I painted it!
"Restoration" Southeastern, PA
(20 X 27)
(Commission)
A beautiful historic home in a beautiful setting in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Complete with its own pump house and trout stream, a more relaxing
and peaceful setting you will not find.
"In the Doghouse"
(8 1/2 X 12 1/4)
A painting of my daughter sitting in our dog,
Bradley's, doghouse. With her head turned like that,
this portrait could be anyone's child.
"18 Fleet Street" Annapolis, MD
(13 X 19 3/4)
Beautiful row house in Annapolis, MD.
A stone's throw from all the action.

"Miss Mary's" Landenberg, PA
(11 1/4 X 17)
Mary, a sweet lady who owned the land on which
our neighborhood was developed, heard that I painted.
She came to my door one day and showed me a
photograph of the side of her house. She thought it
made for an interesting subject. I painted it.

"
Sattui Winery IV" St. Helena, CA
(10 1/2 X 19 1/4)
Probably my favorite winery in the Napa Valley. Located in St. Helena, CA,
this winery exudes charm. Upon entering the winery, there is a small deli in
which you can buy cheese, sausage, etc. These snacks will go great with the
fabulous wine you're about to buy inside. When your wine tasting is complete, step outside underneath the stately oak trees for an impromptu picnic.

"Annapolis Row" Annapolis, MD
(7 X 13 3/4)
What a neat place. Walking the streets of Annapolis
is a slice of Americana. The proud, stately elegance
of these historic homes begged to be painted.

"Topsail Beach" Topsail Beach, NC
(Commission)
A charming vacation home on the Atlantic Ocean
in North Carolina. Known for its rugged surf and
unpredictable weather, Topsail is a beach-lover's paradise.

"Middleton Tavern" Annapolis, MD
(20 X 27 1/2)
On the circle in Annapolis, this place oozes history.
Hand-made bricks, blown window panes, uneven
and rickety floor boards...makes you feel like you're
able to step back in time.
"The Moose" Chesapeake, MD
(Commission)
I was commissioned, via a charity auction, to paint
a house on the Chesapeake Bay. Part of the house's touching "story"
included a brass moose next to a gazebo...so I felt compelled to
paint it and include it as part of the presentation.
"Peppers III" Annapolis, MD
(13 X 19 1/2)
Walk the streets of historic Annapolis and you'll come
across establishments like Peppers. The hand-laid
brick walkways throughout the city are amazing.
"Raleigh Stone" Raleigh, NC
(Commission)
As a "starving artist", I frequently drove around
Raleigh, and took pictures of charming houses that
had real personality. Taking a bit of a risk, I
frequently painted "portraits" of these homes with
the hopes of selling them to the homeowners.
My daughter(s) and I would knock on the doors,
introduce ourselves and offer to sell the paintings. I
think I sold one-in-three while cold calling. Not too bad.
"Check On Me" Napa, CA
One of my favorite paintings, and also one of my
biggest regrets. It's a simple painting, but it has all the
elements I like in a painting: shadows, angles,
contrast. My younger daughter loved this
painting. She imagined that her bedroom was in
the "turret" and she would require that we "check on her"
while she slept in there. It's also one of my biggest
painting regrets because a potential buyer
approached me, offered to buy it...and I sold it.
"Wild Thyme" Centerville, DE
(13 X 19 3/4)
Wild Thyme Flower Shop, part of the picturesque
Delaware Valley. On Rt 52 between Wilmington
and Longwood Gardens.
"Annapolis Row III" Annapolis, MD
(7 1/2 X 14)
Part of my Annapolis series. This work was more of
an artistic study than anything else. But you can feel
the colonial personality in it.
"Barn Study" Raleigh, NC
(10 1/4 X 18 1/2)
An old barn in Raleigh, NC. This painting was part
of a ten-minute sketch of the area. This land is now
part of a TPC Wakefield Plantation golf course in Raleigh.
"Gert's Paradise" Chesapeake, MD
(Commission)
Perched on a bluff right on the Chesapeake, this
home is situated in a beautiful, relaxed setting.
Directly behind you is the water. And the "Moose"
statue is to your left.
"Jack's Request" Hockessin, DE
My son, Jack, bluntly informed me that I painted too
many buildings, and that I should paint some "other
stuff." So, while enjoying a guy's day out with my son,
we came across an old steam locomotive in Hockessin.
I painted it for Jack, and submitted it for his approval.
He pronounced it his favorite painting.
"Greenville Charm..." Greenville, DE
(Commission)
A beautiful home in the Montchanin area of Wilmington;
on the former land of Willamina DuPont Ross.
"Lesuitis Ridge" Wilmington, DE
(Commission)
In the heart of the rolling hills of the beautiful Delaware
Valley, bordering Bidermann Country Club.
"Amanda's Bench" Historic New Castle, DE
(10 X 14)
My daughter took a picture of this bench while we
were spending some "daddy & daughter" time.
We spent a wonderful morning laughing and taking
pictures of possible painting subjects. She pestered
me to paint this study.
"OK, I'll paint a flower scene!"
(15 X 24)
Never particularly cared for the idea of me painting
flowers and such. Felt like I'd have to hand in my
guy card or something. But my wife kept suggesting
that people like to buy paintings of flowers...and
she was right...they sold.
"Two Doors" Historic New Castle, DE
(10 3/4 X 15)
The contrasts of the uneven brick walkway and the
walls and shutters made for an interesting scene.
"Eagle & Cannon Tavern" Historic New Castle, DE
(10 X 14)
The long shadows and the contrast between bright
sunlight and the dark shadows really grabbed me.
"Door to a Garden" Historic New Castle, DE
(7 X 13 1/2)
The shadows of all the growth played up and down
the brick wall and the door. It made my daughter
think of the book The Secret Garden.
"Canadian B & B" Toronto, CA
(Commission)
This place has all kinds of personality. Angles,
long shadows, porches, foliage. This was an
interesting subject to paint.
"Cab in Oak" Sonoma, CA
(8 X 9)
It was a good year for this grape.
"Windy Knoll"
"Dilworthtown Door" West Chester, PA
(18 x 24)
Across the street from the Dilworthtown Inn, there
is a building with an overhang running the length of the
structure. This door, apparently to a private residence,
is situated on the far end. My daughter and I
thought the entire scene (wreath, planters,
brick walkway, and aging plaster) made
for an interesting subject.
