Artist's Comments -

For me, painting is a personal release.  It's an escape from hectic days; a way to get away from the 24-hour news cycle.

When I paint, often I can picture myself walking down that street, standing on that porch or sitting on that bench.  My mind's eye takes me to the scene I'm painting, which allows me to notice some of the finer, more subtle details there.

My goal is to capture the personality of a subject, not necessarily with photograph-like detail but with color and suggestion.  Over the years, in fact, I have reminded myself to get away from rendering perfectly straight lines and the overuse of fine-detail brushes.

I work on a painting in chunks of time.  When the painting has "progressed to a good stopping point," I step back, take a brief look over my shoulder, and then walk away.  Most often, as I walk away, I know exactly which part of the painting I will work on next and with which color mixtures.  And I always look forward to getting back to it!

Being careful not to overwork a subject, the painting itself often lets you know when it's nearing completion.  For me, it's the shadows that complete a painting.  The shadows pull everything together; collectively, they are the final stroke of detail.

About the Artist -

Tom Reindl has worked in watercolor for more than 25 years.  Influenced primarily by William Renzulli, Ranulph Bye, Philip Jamison, and Carolyn Anderson, Tom devotes much of his time painting architectural subjects that have character and personality.  He enjoys painting structures that seem to want to tell a story: interesting homes, old barns, wineries and the like.

Mr. Reindl began painting while living in northern California.  It was during that 11-year period that Tom discovered his appreciation for "unique lines and interesting shadows" in architectural subjects, developing a particular fondness of the Sonoma and Napa Valley wineries.  Following his years in California, he and his family relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina where he gained an additional appreciation for the antebellum architecture so commonly found in the south.  While in Raleigh, Tom often painted "portraits" of interesting homes, and then knocked on doors.  Often, when a homeowner saw an original painting of their home, they felt they had to have it!  It was a bit of a risk, but it seemed to pay off.

And now, having returned to his roots in the mid-Atlantic area, Mr. Reindl enjoys the pleasure of becoming re-acquainted with the beautiful and historic Delaware Valley by getting "lost on the back roads" with camera in hand.

Mr. Reindl is married and a father of three, and makes his residence in pastoral Southern Chester County, PA.
